PLATTSBURGH- Airborne Park Speedway 2016 Chief Technical Inspector, Mark Lamberton, has stepped down for the 2017 season. Lamberton plans to get behind the wheel of a 358 Modified and tackle the new clay surface.
Lamberton, who resides in Mooers Forks, will pilot a new Bicknell Chassis with a W16 engine. The main sponsors will be Banker Orchards, Laware Trucking and JR Taxidermy. Lamberton is unsure as to whether or not he will be number 29 or 44.
“I have always wanted to race a Modified on dirt,” Lamberton said. “I have raced just about every other class on dirt and asphalt and this is something I really want to do.”
Mark’s racing career began in 1986 at Airborne in the 4 cylinder division. He was the champion of the division in 1989. He went on to race at Airborne in the asphalt years as well.
Initial plans were for Lamberton to compete in the Sportsman Modified division, but he received an opportunity to race in the Modified division and couldn’t pass that up. Danny Sullivan will run a Sportsman Modified and be a teammate, as the two will operate out of the Lamberton Racing Stables.
“This is part of the reason I am getting away from the tech job, I really enjoyed it but I didn’t get to enjoy time with my family and old race team.”
The tech department at the speedway will now be run by committee. Norm Guay and Rob Clark will return for this season and will be joined by Jason Garrand for the upcoming season. Garrand was a long-time crew member for Chazy racing legend, Leon Gonyo.
“I had a great time working with Norm and Rob last season,” Lamberton noted. “Jason will be a good fit to work with these guys.”
Airborne Park Speedway Promoter, John Walker, said it is unfortunate to lose Lamberton as an official, but he is glad to see Mark going back behind the wheel.
“Mark did a fantastic job last season with the racers but I am glad he is making this decision to do something he loves because he still has some good years of racing left in him,” Walker stated. “I appreciate all of his hard work and dedication and I think Jason Garrand will work well with Rob and Norm in the tech garage for this season.”
Lamberton mentioned that he has heard a number of positive things about the change and is looking forward to the new adventure in his racing career. There have been a great number of calls inquiring about the Modified and Sportsman Modified divisions.
“A large part of the reason I’m going back racing is because of the fine job that John and his staff have done,” Lamberton said. “I thank John for the opportunity as an official and look forward to supporting him as a racer.”
